Which audio format should you choose?

When extracting audio from MP4, the tool can output MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, or OGG. They differ mainly in compatibility, compression efficiency, and losslessness - here is how to pick.

MP3General sharing, podcasts, car audio

Lossy compression with the widest compatibility; plays on almost any device.

M4A (AAC)iPhone, iTunes, better quality

Better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate; used by Apple and YouTube.

WAVAudio editing, DAW projects

Uncompressed lossless PCM; accepted by every audio editor.

FLACMusic archiving, high-fidelity listening

Lossless compression at roughly half the WAV size.

OGGOpen-source, games, web audio

Open lossy format with a good size/quality balance, but limited Safari support.

FAQ

Is my video file uploaded to any server?Show
No. All conversion happens locally in your browser using WebAssembly. Your video file never leaves your device.
What audio formats are supported for output?Show
You can extract audio to MP3, M4A (AAC), WAV, FLAC, or OGG. MP3 is the most widely compatible; M4A offers better quality at lower bitrates; WAV and FLAC are lossless options for editing and archiving.
Can I extract only a portion of the audio?Show
Yes! You can set custom start and end times to extract only the audio segment you need from the video.
What video formats are supported as input?Show
The tool primarily supports MP4 files, but most common video formats (AVI, MOV, MKV, etc.) should work as well.
How do I choose the right audio quality?Show
For music: use 192-320 kbps. For speech/podcasts: 128 kbps is usually sufficient. Higher bitrates mean better quality but larger file sizes.
What is the difference between 320 kbps and 128 kbps?Show
Bitrate (kbps) is the amount of audio data per second - higher means better quality and larger files. 128 kbps is about 1 MB per minute, while 320 kbps is about 2.4 MB per minute. Note: if the audio track inside your MP4 is only 128 kbps, converting to 320 kbps will not improve the quality - it will just make the file bigger.

Quick Start

  1. Upload an MP4 video file (drag & drop is supported).
  2. Preview the video and select the audio segment you want to extract.
  3. Choose audio quality, bitrate, and output format (MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC or OGG).
  4. Click "Convert to Audio" and wait for the conversion to complete.
  5. Download the extracted audio file.

How to Choose a Bitrate?

Bitrate (kbps) is the amount of audio data per second, and it directly determines both quality and file size. The math is simple: file size per minute ≈ bitrate ÷ 8 × 60 seconds.

BitrateSize per MinuteBest For
64 kbps~0.5 MBVoice recordings, low-quality needs
128 kbps~1 MBPodcasts, speech, casual listening
192 kbps~1.4 MBStandard choice for music distribution
320 kbps~2.4 MBHigh-quality music, near-lossless listening

A common misconception: setting a bitrate higher than the source audio track will not improve quality. Audio tracks inside MP4 files are typically already lossy at 128-256 kbps, so when extracting audio, choose a level equal to or slightly below the source bitrate - going up to 320 kbps only inflates the file for no gain.
